Most drilling fluid formulations consist of a base liquid combined with various additives that must be either dissolved or mechanically dispersed to create a homogeneous fluid. The resulting drilling fluid may contain one or more of the following components: water-dispersible (soluble) polymers or resins, clays or other insoluble yet dispersible fine solids, and soluble salts.

These fluid mixtures are subjected to mixing or shearing for specific durations to achieve a uniform blend and are then set aside to undergo an "aging" process. Drilling fluid aging is a critical procedure in which a drilling fluid sample, previously exposed to a period of shear, is allowed to fully develop its rheological and filtration properties over time. Aging is conducted under varying conditions — ranging from static to dynamic states and from ambient temperatures to highly elevated thermal environments. Hamilton Beach Mixers, available in both Single and Three-Speed Models, are highly recommended for general-purpose mixing of drilling fluids during preparation for laboratory testing of mud materials. The Three-Spindle Model features independent speed controls for each spindle, offering enhanced versatility. These mixers are also well-suited for mixing cement for both field and laboratory testing applications.
