Oil & Water Retort Kit

Oil & Water Retort Kit in Germany

Filtron Envirotech (India) is a premier Manufacturer, Exporter & Supplier of Oil Drilling Chemicals and specialty Oil & Water Retort Kit. Retort Analysis is the process of determining, by distillation, the percentage by volume of solids, water, and oil present in a drilling fluid. This essential equipment plays a vital role in diagnosing solids-related problems in drilling operations. A high percentage of solids in the drilling fluid can adversely affect the rate of penetration (ROP), while a low percentage contributes to poor filtration control and loss of suspension properties — making accurate retort analysis critical for optimal drilling performance.

Operating from our Delhi-based manufacturing facility, we adhere to stringent quality assurance standards across all our products. Our Oil & Water Retort Kit is exported to customers in numerous countries worldwide, reflecting our global reputation for excellence in drilling fluid testing equipment.

The Oil & Water Retort Kit is specifically used to determine the precise amounts of liquids and solids in a drilling fluid. In a standard retort test, a measured sample of drilling fluid is placed in a sample cup and heated to a temperature that vaporizes the liquid components (oil and water) while leaving the solid components behind. The vapors are then passed through a condenser, where they are cooled and converted back into liquid form. The condensed liquids are collected in a graduated cylinder or centrifuge tube that has been calibrated to record the volume of condensed liquids at 20°C (68°F).

The distillate volume is read directly as the volume percent of the original sample. The suspended and dissolved solids content is then calculated by subtracting the total liquid volume (oil + water) from 100% of the initial sample volume. For fresh water-based fluids, the relative proportions of barite (weighting material) and clay can be estimated from the solids analysis. However, for saltwater or brine-based muds, appropriate corrections must be made for salt content when calculating the solids volume percentage.

The Oil & Water Retort provides a simple, direct, and reliable field method for determining the percentage by volume of oil and water in drilling mud samples or in formation core samples. This retort has proven especially useful in determining the oil content of emulsion muds (oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions), where accurate oil/water ratios are critical for maintaining proper mud properties. Regular retort analysis enables mud engineers to:

Optimize Solids Control – Balance solids content for maximum ROP
Maintain Proper Oil/Water Ratio – Ensure emulsion stability in OBM
Monitor Additive Concentrations – Track treatment effectiveness
Troubleshoot Mud Problems – Identify viscosity, filtration, or stability issues
