This spotting fluid allows penetration of the fluid and wetting of the drill string. By reducing the forces of cohesion between the pipe and filter cake, the pipe can be freed. It finds application in wells requiring a weighted soak solution to free differentially stuck pipes. How Spotting Fluid Works: When a drill pipe becomes differentially stuck, a portion of the pipe becomes embedded in the filter cake against a permeable formation. The weighted spotting fluid is pumped and "spotted" directly against the stuck interval. The wall cake cracking material breaks down the filter cake structure, while the surface active agents, emulsifiers, and wetting agents penetrate the cake, lubricate the pipe surface, and reduce the differential pressure holding the pipe against the wellbore wall. This allows the pipe to be freed with reduced pulling force.
