PHPA's strong encapsulating and filming action effectively stabilizes clay and shale formations, blocks the absorption or inhibition of water from the drilling fluids, and prevents clay and shale cuttings from disintegration and dispersion into the mud while carrying them up the annulus from the bit to the surface. Drilling fluids containing PHPA exhibit beneficial shear-thinning properties, which helps maximize drilling rate by maintaining low bit viscosity while providing high lifting capacity at the lower shear rates present in the annulus.
