Filtron Envirotech (India) is a premier Manufacturer, Exporter & Supplier of Oil Drilling Chemicals and specialty Mud Balance equipment. Operating from our Delhi-based manufacturing facility, we uphold the highest standards of quality assurance across all our products. Our Mud Balance is exported to customers in numerous countries worldwide, reflecting our global reputation for excellence in drilling fluid testing instruments.
The Mud Balance is a simple, reliable, and highly accurate instrument designed for fast determination of drilling fluid density. Also known as a mud density balance or drilling fluid hydrometer, this essential field tool provides immediate measurements of mud weight — a critical parameter for maintaining proper hydrostatic pressure, controlling formation kicks, preventing blowouts, and ensuring overall wellbore stability. Accurate density measurement is fundamental to safe and efficient drilling operations, making the Mud Balance an indispensable instrument on every drilling rig, whether onshore or offshore.
The Mud Balance features a robust, precision-engineered design consisting of a fixed-volume sample cup with an airtight lid, connected to a graduated balance arm, a movable rider, a knife-edge pivot, and a built-in spirit level for accurate leveling. The instrument operates on the lever balance principle — the sample cup is filled with drilling fluid, the rider is moved along the graduated arm until the balance is level (indicated by the spirit level), and the density is read directly from the scale at the rider's position. This simple yet effective mechanism provides repeatable, accurate measurements without requiring electricity, batteries, or complex calibration procedures.
Our Mud Balance is engineered to measure drilling fluid density across four different ranges (scales), providing maximum versatility for various drilling fluid types and operational requirements. The four measurement scales include:
• Specific Gravity Range – 0.72 to 2.88 specific gravity (SG)
• Pounds per Gallon Range – 6 to 24 pounds per gallon (PPG / lb/gal)
• Pounds per Cubic Foot Range – 45 to 180 pounds per cubic foot (PCF / lb/ft³)
• Pressure Gradient Range – 310 to 1250 pounds per square inch per 1000 feet of depth (PSI/1000 ft)
Construction & Durability: The Mud Balance is constructed from a special high-grade aluminum alloy that offers an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. This material choice provides several critical advantages: it is lightweight for easy field handling and transport, exceptionally corrosion-resistant for long service life in harsh drilling environments, dimensionally stable for consistent accuracy over time, and durable enough to withstand the rigors of daily use on active drilling rigs. The knife-edge pivot is precision-machined for smooth, frictionless movement, while the built-in spirit level ensures accurate horizontal positioning for every measurement.
Applications & Benefits:
• Drilling Fluid Density Measurement – Quickly determines mud weight for hydrostatic pressure calculations.
• Field Quality Control – Enables immediate on-site density checks without laboratory equipment.
• Kick Detection & Well Control – Identifies density changes that may indicate formation fluid influx.
• Additive Optimization – Helps determine correct weighting material concentrations (barite, hematite, etc.).
• Routine Monitoring – Establishes baseline density values for consistent mud quality control.
• Compatible Fluids – Suitable for water-based muds (WBM), oil-based muds (OBM), synthetic-based muds (SBM), completion fluids, and cement slurries.
Standard Test Procedure: The mud density measurement process is straightforward and quick. The operator fills the sample cup completely with the drilling fluid, ensuring no air bubbles are trapped. The lid is placed securely to seal the cup. The balance arm is placed on the knife-edge pivot, and the rider is moved along the graduated arm until the bubble in the spirit level is centered, indicating perfect balance. The density value is then read directly from the scale at the rider's position. The entire process takes less than one minute, allowing rig personnel to monitor mud density frequently throughout drilling operations.
