PHPA's strong encapsulating and filming action stabilizes clay and shale formations, effectively blocks the absorption or inhibition of water from the drilling fluids, and prevents clay and shale cuttings from disintegration and dispersion into the mud while carrying them up the annulus from the bit to the surface. Fluids containing PHPA exhibit shear-thinning properties, which helps maximize drilling rate by maintaining low bit viscosity while providing high lifting capacity at the lower shear rates found in the annulus.
